 The Search for Sustainable Livelihoods

Despite decades of "development," poverty in the South has continued to increase. Existing development approaches may lend themselves to elegant models, but they are not working. We need to find alternative paths.

"The Search for Sustainable Livelihoods" module shares knowledge emerging from household and community-level initiatives in the South. It is grounded in the sustainable livelihoods projects of two non-governmental organizations, Development Alternatives in India and ENDA in Senegal. By sharing our experiences through the Internet with fellow NGO workers, development agencies, students, and journalists, we hope to encourage you to promote sustainable livelihoods within other communities around the world.

To learn more about sustainable livelihoods, follow the links on the left. Each section will provide you with an overview and links to specific examples from India and Senegal. Or, you may access the ENDA or Development Alternatives sustainable livelihoods modules directly to learn about their work.
