La mayoría de las listas de correo electrónico son grupos interactivos de discusión que se comunican por medio del correo electrónico, aunque hay algunas de una sola vía para comunicar anuncios. Cualquier persona con acceso al correo electrónico puede utilizar este sistema, que es una forma conveniente de intercambiar ideas e información a nivel mundial. Cualquier miembro de una lista puede enviar mensajes de correo electrónico dirigidos a la lista, que el servidor distribuirá entre todos los demás miembros. Algunas listas son moderadas, lo que significa que una persona revisa cada mensaje antes de enviarlo a los demás miembros de la lista para garantizar que el mensaje no se salga por la tangente o contenga "publicidad basura" o ataques personales. Puesto que hay diferentes tipos de software para listas (listserv; majordomo; listproc; mailbase; y almanac) las instrucciones específicas ("comandos") para suscribirse, etc., pueden variar.
