La plupart des listes de distribution électronique forment des groupes interactifs de discussions menées par courrier électronique, bien que certains échanges soient de simples annonces. Les personnes disposant d'un accès au courrier électronique peuvent utiliser ce système qui constitue un moyen pratique d'échange d'idées et d'information à l'échelle mondiale. Tout membre d'une liste peut envoyer par e-mail des messages adressés à la liste, que le serveur transmettra à tous les autres membres. Certaines listes sont dites modérées, ce qui signifie qu'une personne est chargée de passer en revue chaque message avant sa transmission à tous les autres membres pour s'assurer que le contenu a bien rapport avec le sujet en discussion et pour prévenir le courrier sans intérêt (spams) et les attaques personnelles (flames). Il existe ainsi des
milliers de listes différentes, regroupant chacune des utilisateurs partageant des intérêts particuliers.
Etant donné qu'il existe plusieurs types différents de sofware (listserv; majordomo; listproc; mailbase; et almanac), les commandes spécifiques d'adhésion et autres détails peuvent différer d'un cas à l'autre. Mais dans tous les cas de figure, la série des options disponibles peut être obtenue par simple activation de la commande "aide". Pour cela, il vous suffira d'envoyer un message à l'une des "adresses des listes" figurant à la fin du descriptif de la liste.
