Welcome to the Sustainability Web Ring, a service of the Sustainable Development Communications Network (SDCN). This Internet tool allows users to navigate easily between Web sites that deal with the principles, policies, and best practices for sustainable development. By following the links through the Web ring, you will find information from around the world on how to deal with such crucial issues as climate change, cleaner production, waste, poverty, consumerism, natural resource management, and governance. This information is particularly suited to decision-makers within civil society, government, business, research and funding institutions, and communities.
Our goal is to stimulate further debate and interest in sustainable development. Inclusion of a site in the Sustainability Web Ring does not constitute endorsement by the SDCN or any other member of the Web Ring.
The Sustainability Web Ring has been in existence since early 1998 and is maintained by the SDCN. The underlying database tehcnology is owned and operated by the WebRing company.
Using the Web Ring
|
|
A Web ring control panel (shown on the left) is on the home page of every organization in the Sustainability Web Ring. Use these control panels to navigate from one page in the ring to another. You can move through Web ring pages sequentially by clicking on 'Next', 'Previous', or 'Index' buttons.
N.B.: This is a functioning control panel. Try it now to see other Sustainability Web Ring member pages!

Criteria for Joining the Sustainability Web Ring
Before submitting your site ask yourself if your site fulfills the following criteria:
- It must explicitly deal with the overlap between at least two of the following elements of sustainable development:
- social well-being,
- environment, and
- economy
- It must contain substantive content about principles, policies, or best practices for sustainable development or contain educational information about SD policy and practice. [Note: anecdotal information is not acceptable (e.g. a list of activities such as "On May 17, we picked up garbage in the neighbourhood")]
- It must belong to an organization, institution, professional association, or government office
- Contact information must be easily available on the site
- It must have more than local scope (e.g. a neighbourhood Web page will likely not be accepted, but a site linking to other relevant neighbourhood pages may be accepted)
- The Sustainability Web Ring panel must be displayed on the homepage or you will be removed from the ring.
|
PLEASE NOTE: the following types of sites will not be admitted:
- personal home pages
- commercial sites that are primarily product advertisements
If your site does not meet our criteria, we suggest visiting the WebRing Directory to locate a more appropriate web ring.

Adding the Control Panel to your Site

- You have two different designs to choose from (shown below). Choose either the vertically or horizontally oriented control panel and copy the corresponding HTML code onto the homepage of your site.
- Save the image you want and put it in the same directory as the file into which you have copied the HTML code.
- In each of the lines where it says: "2" replace it with the Site ID number. Your Site ID number was sent to you in the email stating the site's acceptance into the Sustainability Web Ring.
- Once you have added the HTML code to your page look at it in your browser to make sure everything is functioning properly.
- If you need help with any of these steps please e-mail the Ring Manager (webring@iisd.ca) for assistance.
Note: If you prefer to use the standard WebRing server side navigation bar (SSNB), please follow the link to view/edit you site information that was in the email you received when your site was approved. From that URL, there is a link to "Get Navigation Code" with all necessary instructions.
